Name: Nord Ronnoc (d’Deneith)

Age: 27 (as of 998 YK)

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Class: Swordmage

Alignment: Unaligned (Neutral, perhaps, in previous editions)

Homeworld: Eberron

Appearance: He appeared to be very weathered and rigid, as if he really needed a long, peaceful rest. He wore a long, worn-out, blue, leather coat with a blood-red shirt underneath. He also wore a pair of tan-green pants, and his brown boots reach a few inches below his knees, along with his magical sword hanging down by his waist. He also has the Mark of Sentinel, one of the twelve dragonmarks, on the left side of his face, reaching down to his neck. The lack of hygiene showed tell-tale signs on Nord, such as the untidiness of his light-brown hair and the barely seen dark rings around his blue eyes, due to his “small” lack of sleep.

Abilities: Ability to channel magic with his sword, very intelligent, and can do swordfighting very well. Since he was a Swordmage, he has a bond with his sword, which he could summon it to his hand from a distance and could repair his sword, even from the smallest shard, and with him wielding his sword, his chances of getting hit will lessen.

History: Born in a town in the northern part of Aundair, Nord Ronnoc lived a seemingly peaceful life with his twin sister and his archivist parents until one day, at a young age, religious fanatics attacked the town. The town was able to hold off the attack, but not without some losses. His twin sister was among those who have died.

Not long after that event, Nord moved on to train as a Knight Arcane in his home country. By the age of 18, House Deneith, one of the thirteen official houses, recruited Nord as a Blademark mercenary, due to the evidence that Nord has the Mark of Sentinel, one of the twelve dragonmarks, along with the potential of a warrior. He participated in skirmishes for five years during the Last War. He had made some choices during that time that he later regretted.

On Olarune 20 994 YK, when Nord, at the age of 23, was on a scouting mission with another squad, an incident related to the Day of Mourning caused his entire squad to perish, leaving him one of thousands spared on that day. Due to his excellent performance during the Last War and his will to live, House Deneith promoted Nord to a Sentinel Marshal.

For four years, Nord investigated and solved crime scenes, and brought in criminals for justice (usually killed criminals, as his own form of justice). However, he has been secretly studying what caused Cyre to be destroyed and why, but that didn't take him anywhere, until there are many whispers about four of the Five Nations involved in a shadow war. As well as the next war. Hearing these rumors from trusted sources, Nord will have to prevent a catastrophic war from happening. Or at least keep a small war from becoming too big.

Personality: Nord as a brilliant mind, though he was pragmatic and often little impressed him, as well as being cynical and gruff. Also, he’s very fascinated, even preoccupied, with the tales and studies of magic, due to being trained as a Knight Arcane. Practical and ruthless, Nord had done some things that made others cringe, and he may do so again. Fortunately, he has standards, like most people.

Weaknesses: Aside from being human, some say that Nord could be obsessed in achieving his goals, though others say that would be determination. In fact, he may intimidate you into spitting out whatever he wanted to hear; even it would endanger his life. Sadly, he often either get into a lot of trouble for his actions or gotten called out by the others, including his superiors.

Weapon: A magical sword, which he can use it to channel his magical powers. He also has a crossbow, along with a few daggers, to back him up.

Name: Lily Someras

Age: 20

Race: Halfling

Gender: Female

Class: Healer

Alignment: Neutral

Home world (if non-FMA): Eberron

History: Lily was born in Karrnath’s city of Vedykar. Her parents were desperately in need of money to pay debts, their mortgage, food… Luckily for them, their daughter was born with the Mark of Healing. As soon as they were able, they sold her to the House of Jorasco. Her training was begun as soon as possible.
Like all citizens of Karrnath, she served two years in the military. She saw more than her fill of death, not all of it permanent, and injury during her service. This, she realized, was what her life would be for the rest of her days. She studied almost relentlessly, believing that if she did she would be able to prevent death from unfolding before her eyes ever again.
When she, and her fellow healers, were helpless in the face of an epidemic she gave it up as hopeless. She continued to do her job only because she believed she would survive, even if few others did. After many tireless months, a cure was found. Astonished, Lily regained a measure of hope, but did not go back to studying at every opportunity. Instead, having learned to mostly ignore death, she focused on making a living.
Life, while not exactly cheerful, was good. Lily had many patients to take care of, especially since Jorasco provided ongoing care for those permanently disabled in the Last War. She tended to be a bit territorial when it came to her patients, after all if someone else took care of them it was money out of her pocket. When a few of her patients disappeared, and no one seemed to know just where they went, she decided to investigate.
What she discovered was a group of Blood of Vol, using Jorasco patients in necromantic rituals. They quickly discovered her and, if not for some quick talking, she would have been the next sacrifice. Instead she helped them find new victims. She was watched closely by the Blood of Vol, so she did not risk going to Ulara d’Jorasco with the information. This went on for a few months when a group of adventurers decided to try their hand at figuring out House Jorasco’s mystery.
As the adventurers got closer to their goal, the cult spent less of its time watching her. Lily debated whether to go to Ulara d’Jorasco, keep quiet, or go to the adventurer’s with her information. If she went to the matriarch it was possible that she would be executed, kicked out of the house, or just put under a careful watch. If she kept quiet and the adventurers succeeded, as it seemed they would, she would almost certainly be executed or kicked out of the House, unless the Blood of Vol didn’t mention her... which was doubtful. If she went to the adventurers the Blood of Vol would know, but she had observed the adventures carefully and they were the sort who would demand you get a second chance for coming forward with the information, if it seemed you were not going to be given one. However, that could be a front they put up to lure in informants. No matter her choice, it was more likely to turn out badly for her than not. With this in mind, she decided to go to her matriarch, hoping the woman would just be glad for answers. If it seemed she wasn’t, Lily would point out that getting herself killed wouldn’t have helped anyone. Her decision made, she started to Ulara d’Jorasco’s office.

Appearance: She had a contradicting air of melancholy and optimism about her, as if the world had never been good but had a small possibility of becoming so. She wore a pair of sturdy, ankle-high boots, with black pants tucked into them. A silver blouse ended just above her pants. She carried a quarter staff that matched the theme of her outfit in her right hand. Her small figure was veiled in ash-white hair that stopped at her waist. Near its end, it was tied with a red ribbon. Her pale face housed two indifferently curious blood-red eyes. She had the Mark of Healing on her right thigh.

Abilities: Ability to heal injuries and most illnesses. She had knowledge of herb lore. She channeled magic through her quarter staff. She occasionally has amazing strokes of luck. She had a knack for figuring things out, mostly due to the curiosity that was at the core of her being. If only she had the ability to get out of the situations it could throw her into. Luckily, she’s good at hiding.

Personality: Lily has an enormous amount of curiosity, but not much tact. She will ask what most would consider very personal questions soon after meeting someone. However, if they show a reluctance to answer, she won’t press the issue. She tries to stay out of politics, but no one in Eberron can completely escape intrigue. She will do anything she has to in order to stay alive. She hopes that someday she will have something she values more than her own life. She believes that there is a chance for happiness as long as someone is alive, no matter how slim. She also believes that one can only feel emotions they felt when they were alive in the afterlife. Occasionally, she will heal someone for free, even if her life wouldn’t be in danger if she didn’t. She will do this to prove herself, or to try and endear herself to someone. She loves dresses but rarely wears them, because she’s afraid that she won’t be able to escape danger quickly enough if she does.

Weakness: She can be very rude. If someone is reluctant to tell her something, she will almost always immediately back off. She’s so blunt it’s a wonder that she’s lived as long as she has, as least in Eberron. Her coloring makes her easy to spot. She has no fighting skills; in fact she is only barely in her age group’s range for physical fitness. While her height isn’t a problem in House Jorasco, it is troublesome almost everywhere else. She’s very stubborn, especially about her hair. When she’s not asking questions, she tends to be silent unless spoken to. The only things she can ‘cook’ are healing salves/potions.

Weapon: A black quarter staff with a silver undertone.

The towers in the city of Sharn stretched up to the sky, disappearing into a stale, grey dome of clouds. Many lights in the city gleamed in thousands and thousands of windows, with smoke trailing up from chimneys and billows, coming up from some unseen furnaces. Great bridges arched between the towers. Magical lifts glided up and down among glowing strains of light, along with flying vessels drifting from balcony to tower. The fiery rings of several airships blazed against the stormy sky; with the lighting rails itself rounded a bend. The depths of the city glowed with the ruddy light of its foundries and forges.

“Welcome to Sharn,” a humanoid voice called out from a speaker as a crowd of passengers exited a grounded airship, recent from its journey. Among the crowd, there was a weary man in a blue, long coat by the name of Nord, with many people eyed his blue, complex tattoo-looking mark on the left side of his face, reaching down to his neck. That mark was one of the twelve famed dragonmarks, the Mark of Sentinel.

Nord then ventured forth from the airship and headed off into the city in search of a wizard named Alistor. After wandering through the streets in the Upper Central Plateau, he spotted a sign on a door of a small building, tucked away and completely overshadowed by the taller ones on either side. Nord walked up to the door and read the sign.

~ALISTOR MORDON~
PROFESSIONAL WIZARD
Fancy getting rid of a disease, poison
or other types of symptoms caused by magic?
Want to get a scroll or a potion?
Do you have a question or require some service?
Then you've come to the right place!

Not commenting about the sign, Nord knocked on the door. He waited for a moment, but there was no answer, even though there were clearly lights on inside. He was just about to knock again when a voice startled him, seeming to come from the door itself. “Great, always when I was working on my experiments,” it sighed. “You better make this quick, then. Y’know experiments can’t finish on their own.” Symbols started glowing on the door, and after a brief period of clicking and clanking, the door opened of its own accord, revealing a small man with black eyes and abnormally red, spiky hair.

“Yes, what is—” the small man, Alistor the gnome, began to ask, but he stopped midsentence as he recognized Nord, his eyes widening. “Oh, it’s you! I must say that beard suits you quite well, yes?”

“I suppose so,” Nord replied in his native Aundairian accent.

“Then I take it that you’ve received my message?” Alistor asked eagerly.

“What do you think?” Nord asked in a deadpan tone, folding his arms in front of him. “Now are we going to discuss what you’ve discovered, or are we just going to stand here all day, waiting for your answer?”

“Right, right. Do come it! Pity that I do not have any alcohol beverages, but be sure to watch your step. You may never know what would happen to you if you’re not careful.

“Alright,” Nord nodded. He stepped inside and looked around the small, cluttered room. Books and potions were scattered around everywhere, collecting dust. On the middle of the floor was what appeared to be a chalk drawing, thought it was somewhat faded. It looked like another ritual; it was very detailed and had some sort of arcane runes.

Nord picked up one of the books and dusted off the cover. The book was simple titled Alchemy. He knew what alchemy was, or at least that it involved making poisons, potions, and such, but he was too curious to resist. So, he flipped through the book. Nord was surprised at such unfamiliar terms, such as the Equivalent Exchange, the Law of Conversion of Mass, and the Law of Natural Providence. Perhaps these books lying about could be related to Alistor’s discovery, Nord thought.

‘If I ask—“ Nord was about to ask, showing the book he was holding to Alistor.

“Oh, this?” Alistor asked, interrupting Nord. “Well, I’ve discovered a world, per se.

“There are many worlds and planes of existence out there,” Nord spoke. “What makes the one you’ve discovered so special?

“Sit down with me and I shall explain,” Alistor replied as he and Nord sat down on their chairs by a nearby table, serving their tea, as well as Nord placing the book on the table. Alistor then cleared his throat afterwards.

“Well, what was quite unique about this world was not only that there were only just humans in that world, it also had a different type of magic, which was called alchemy, as well as their technologies are a bit…different,” Alistor explained as he sipped his tea.

“Were you actually the first one to discover it, or was it somebody else before you?” Nord asked as he sipped his tea. It was refreshing, to say the least.

Alistor paused for a moment. “You’ve always asked too many questions,” he sighed. “From my experiences, you humans are quite a nosy lot, poking into other people’s business and lives, even for a Sentinel Marshal such as yourself.”

“Take a long, good look at your country of Zilargo,” Nord replied. “With this organization, the Trust. They’ve always interfere with people’s businesses to ensure the safety of their country.”

“Point taken, my friend,” Alistor spoke as he and Nord finished their tea. “Now before you get somewhat…cautious, I’ve taken in some safety precautions for the portal, so you wouldn’t have to lose a limb or two. Or your whole entire body, for that matter.”

This was peaking Nord’s interest. “So you’ve made a portal, then?” he asked as he leaned back on his chair, his hands together on his chest. “Fascinating. Out of curiosity, may I see some of your work?” he realized, from the looks of this place, before he even went inside, Alistor had been gone for some time.

“Sure, just give me a moment or two to set up the spell. You may look at some of these books, if you would like to,” Alistor answered as he stood up and entered another room behind him. Nord leaned forward on his chair as he picked up the same book from earlier and flipped through it.

Several minutes later, there was a flash of light, along with some lightning, coming from the room where Alistor was at. Sensing something went awry with Alistor’s spell, Nord looked up to see the gnome fleeing the room and quickly locking the door behind him. He breathed very heavily, and his skin was very sweaty as he leaned against the closed door.

“What went wrong?” Nord asked curiously. “I thought that there wouldn’t be any incidents. It turns out I was wrong.” He already noticed the way Alistor was looking, but he was more concerned about how dangerous Alistor’s spell actually was.

Before Alistor could answer, a large number of thin, black arms sprouted through the door, reaching toward him and Nord. The door creaked, and Alistor backed away cautiously from the door as more and more of the arms sprouted out of it until the door broke open, knocking him out as it slammed him against the wall. Nord went to Alistor and looked at the door. Wary of more surprises, he drew his blade. He stayed by Alistor's side, dragging him to safety, as he stared at the arms that came from the door.

But no matter how quickly he slashed, they were faster. One entwined itself around his ankle as another seized his wrist. Nord tried to free himself, but they kept coming. He stared in horror as his leg, arm, and then the rest of his body began to vanish, almost like it was disintegrating. Just as suddenly as it all began, Nord was gone.

The light from the other room disappeared as Alistor regained his consciousness, grunting in pain. There was absolutely no trace of Nord. The gnome cursed at himself, pondering if creating his own spell was ever a good idea.

. . .

Nord opened his eyes only to close them against the sudden brightness. He attempted to sit up, but it felt as though something was holding him down, either that or it was the fact that he couldn't open his eyes without feeling completely blinded.

He tried to move again and found himself sitting up; he opened his eyes once more and blinked away the fuzzy brightness. He looked around the white space he was standing in, but there was nothing but a gate with strange symbols on them, floating above the ground. He suspected that these had to do with him, what he was, and his past, perhaps even his future.

If you’re thinking about opening down the gate with your powers, it wouldn’t work”, a strange, disorientated voice called out; startling Nord as he look around for where that voice came from.

"Brilliant. Then where are you?” Nord asked. There wasn't a response yet.

I'm right in front of you,” the voice answered. Nord looked up and got a second surprise. There was a figure sitting in front of him, barely visible except for a faint outline, which resembled that of a human adult, around Nord's height.

“Who are you?” asked Nord.

Oh! I’m so glad you asked!” the thing replied, pointing its finger upward. “I’m what you call ‘The World.’ Or ‘The Universe,’ or ‘God,’ or ‘Truth,’ or ‘One,’ or ‘All.’ And…” the thing continued, pointing at Nord. “I’m ‘You'.

Nord shivered as a chill ran down his spine. Whatever this thing was, it was dangerous. He needed to get away from it.

It never gave him a chance. “Welcome, you ignorant fool,” said Truth. Behind Nord, the gate opened revealing giant eyes and more of the black arms that had brought them there. Nord turned around, but he was too late to keep from being quickly snatched. They dragged their prize through the gate, and as the doors of the gate closed behind him, the sound of Truth’s mocking laughter rang in his ears.
